Forward-thinking research

In addition to patient care, research is one of our central tasks in the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery. We actively work in the field of clinical research as well as in basic research. This covers the entire spectrum from prevention to diagnostics and therapy. Our focus in surgical research is on inflammation, oncology, organ transplantation and regenerative medicine. Our laboratory is centrally located in the Surgery Department and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

The UKM not only treats (seriously) ill patients, but also trains future physicians together with the medical faculty. One of them is Anna-Maria Diedrich, who is currently writing her doctoral thesis and conducting research at the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery.
"Surgery is a very interesting subject, you can do a lot of practical things in research. We have to be hands-on and it's not just theoretical." For her doctorate, she is focusing on one organ in particular: the liver.

The UKM not only treats ill patients, but also trains future physicians together with the medical faculty. One of them is Maximiliane Winter, who is currently writing her doctoral thesis and conducting research at the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery. "I am working on the specific role of immune cells in intestinal wound healing. This is important for intestinal surgery, for example in inflammatory bowel disease or in colon cancer."

Supporting research

As a central institution, our biobank makes disease research possible. Donated samples are stored in strictly pseudonymous form and are available for medical research with the aim of gaining new insights into the development of new methods regarding the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. So, during your hospitalization, we may ask you to donate some blood for our biobank. Your participation is voluntary and can be revoked at any time. You can be absolutely sure that you will not be exposed to any unnecessary risks. You will help us understand the cause of diseases and find the best possible therapy.
